Not only are we licensed by the Ohio Department of Health. Radon Tester (License# 1252), but we also use some of the most reliable and advanced equipment in the industry.

What is Radon?

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas caused by the decomposition of Uranium which is found in varying levels in all rocks and soil. It is tasteless, odorless, and invisible. Radon is a known carcinogen causing over 21,000 deaths per year due to lung cancer. Smoking, radon, and second-hand smoke are the leading causes of lung cancer. Radon is the number one cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Although lung cancer can be treated, the survival rate is one of the lowest for those with cancer. From the time of diagnosis, between 11 and 15% of those afflicted will live beyond five years. In many cases, lung cancer can be prevented—this is especially true for radon.

How is radon measured?

Every home has radon present but the need for mitigation is dictated by the level of which it is present. The amount present is expressed as pCi/L (picocurie per liter)- the amount of radioactive materials present in a liter, about a quart, of air. Radon can be measured using several types of test equipment. Citadel Property Inspections utilizes the most advanced and reliable equipment in the industry. Our monitors are crossed checked every six months against a monitor that has recently been sent to a laboratory for calibration. The monitors are sent to a laboratory every year for calibration as required by the Ohio Department of Health. This process ensures complete accuracy with every measurement taken. To perform the test, we place the monitor in the home to take readings every hour for 48 hours.  At the end of the 48 hours, the results are immediately available for review. All data is reviewed for any sign of tampering by a trained professional.

What are the acceptable levels?

The Environmental Protection Agency set an action level of 4 pCi/L for indoor radon. The EPA recommends mitigation if radon levels are at 4 pCi/L or more.
